Total Games Realm: Your Beginner's Guide
« on: August 13, 2011, 11:51:42 AM »
So you took the plunge and signed up, but don't know where to start? Well here's a short guide to give you some tips and instructions to give you the best possible experience with us. Just following a few simple tips could lead you to a few things you may not yet have noticed, so it's well worth a read regardless of how long you have already been here.

So on to it, let's start at the beginning.

Guests Viewing

Guests are a very common sight around TGR. Many of our topics are visible to guests so they are able to simply take a look around and find the information they need. We have great search engine friendly thread layouts which make sure that a number of searches list us very near the top. This brings us a lot of these guest views and also provides many people with the information they're looking for.

All guests are completely welcome to join up and explore more of our features though, as there are a few that aren't available to non-members - like our permanent front-page mini chat room, our image gallery which enables you to upload your own images, and more boards that might not necessarily be available to guests.

Initial Entry

If you've registered (obviously completely free) then you'll have made your first few steps into a great experience for your gaming needs. But, what should you do first? If you have sound enabled, you may very well have heard a sinister "bing bong", or even a "bong bing" sound. If there's someone hanging around in the chat room, that's what you're hearing. Take a look on the left-hand side of the screen, just below the calendar. That's our little chat room there, and you are more than welcome to enter a username and say hello. You'll be given a warm welcome and is a great way to get to know our members. The chat box appears on every forum page apart from the main welcome page, so don't worry about visiting other site links, it will move with you and all chat will stay in there and you won't miss anything. Of course if nobody else is in chat don't worry, I'm sure given a little time someone may turn up.

So, what's your next step? Well, you may fancy a stroll through our forum - here's a list of the most important threads to check early on.

Forum Rules - This is our most important thread. It covers the forum rules and guidelines that must be followed. Please read this thread before going any further.

Guide To BBCode - If you would like to see some tips on certain codes you can use in posts, this thread has a good list. Then can add a little flair to your posts, and cover some of the special tags available, like spoilers. Well worth a look.

Game Meets - This is the board where you will find all the game meets currently in planning or in progress. This is one of the most important areas of the forum and you should make sure that you check this as often as you can to see if any meets are approaching. You may also post your own meets on this board and see if can get some members joining in with your games. The more meets on the go the better, so feel free to post as often as you possibly can.

Image Gallery - Our gallery is there for use by all members that need it. You may upload pictures (just try to get them in the right category) and may also use the on-site image re-size tool to make sure the pictures aren't too big (make sure that if you use this you back up your original image first - it resizes the stock image permanently ready for upload). While viewing the gallery, when you click an image to view it, you will see it offers you BBCode and Direct HTML code to the image. These may be used to link your images into posts (BBCode for the forums here, HTML for other sites). Simply copy the code, and paste it where you would like the image to appear.

Facebook Page - Our Facebook page is there for anybody to "like". Please feel free to visit the page and click that "Like" button to add it to your news feed, and whenever something is posted on there you will see it immediately in your stream.

Twitter - Much like our Facebook page, our Twitter feed is available for all to follow. Simply visit our page and click follow. Most of the followers we get will get a follow in return, unless they look like spam or fake accounts.

Far Cry 2 Mapping Community - Our Far Cry 2 mapping community is huge. A lot of people sign up just for it and although we encourage them to take in all we have to offer, this is the primary area for all of your Far Cry 2 queries and needs. One special note - there's a special map upload and download feature available for use at the bottom of the board list. Simply attach your map file as an attachment in that forum and your map will be added to our official downloads list. More thorough instructions here.

Staff List - If you need to contact a staff member, this page lists all available admins and moderators, with a direct link to send each one a personal message. Any problems, questions or requests may be done in this way, or alternatively in our Help, Ideas, Complains, and Feedback forum.

There are many more boards that would be worth a look - we suggest you have a good exploration of all the boards to see what's happening in all the different areas. We have lots of different games covered on our boards, and they're all pretty easy to find. A few titles are found in the TGR Discussion area, some used more than others. But to find the many other game boards we have listed, simply scroll down the main page a little to find the "General Gaming" category. You'll see a few different main boards there, e.g. First Person Shooters, and inside each of those you'll find "child boards" relating to specific titles too. Posts can be made either in the main board or any of the related child boards. Take a look through the many titles already listed - and feel free to ask us to add some that don't already exist.

My First Post

So, what are you going to do first? Well you may already have found a post that you're interested in - it might have even brought you here. Well, feel free to reply to the subject in question. Obviously just follow the site rules to make sure you get a nice warm welcome.

If you are starting a brand new post, all you have to do is go into your chosen board (e.g. Meet-Up Madness, First Person Shooters, Ask TGR) and click the "New Topic" button. You'll be taken to a page where you need to fill in a subject, and also a larger field for you to write the message content. Simply fill in those two fields and then look below the content box, and click "Post". If you would like to see a preview of it first, click "Preview", and it will appear a little further up the page. Lastly, if you want to check any spelling, click "Spell Check".

If you are instead going to reply to someone else's post, it's just as simple. Just click to view their post, and click the "reply" button. There you can write your message in the box, and click "post" again at the bottom. Simple, eh?

But what then? Well, you can explore the other boards, see if there's anything else you fancy. And, feel free to head into the Introductions board and post yourself a welcome message and introduce yourself so our members can get to know you. You'll get a nice warm welcome and gives you your very own little thread to say whatever you want. Also, keep an eye out for new members posts in there and give them a welcome yourself.

There's also a Member Profiles forum where you can post a bigger, better profile for yourself. Take a look at some of the other posts and see what to add to your very own.

With all of those basics covered, you should be well on your way to knowing most of what you need to know to start your TGR experience rolling. By now you should have met a few members either in chat or on the forums, and familiarised yourself with some of our features and boards. Feel free to explore as much of the site as you like. Get involved with any subjects you like, and also start any new ones you think might be interesting to others.

We hope you find this information useful. If you still need help or guidance, simply use the chat room, post a message, or PM a staff member. We'll all offer as much assistance as we are able to make your stay with us as easy, informative, and useful as possible.

Thank you for reading,

Welcome to Total Games Realm

Advanced Features

So, you're now ok with navigating and simple posting. Good going trooper!

This post will help you with some more of our advanced features to further enhance your experience and knowledge with our community. So take a glance through and see what else you can learn!

We'll jump right to it this time. If you have got this far then you should have a lot of the basics covered, and should have already got yourself a few posts under your belt.

Quoting

Quoting is a feature used quite widely on many forums as a way to "nest" someone else's post into a reply. It helps for people to understand which parts of a person's post you might be replying to in particular, as you can remove un-needed parts, or just leave the whole post as it was originally (not recommended for large posts - condensed versions always preferred).

It's a pretty simple process, very similar to that you would use when creating your own reply to somebody's topic.

To use it, there are a few different methods.

While viewing somebody's post, you will notice a small "quote" button - on the top right hand corner of each post in a thread. By clicking this, you will be taken to the "reply" screen, and you will notice that the text of the post you just clicked will be inside your content box. This is where you can edit the quoted text, then add your own in response.

Ideally, you should put your response below all the quote code. General forum use around the web has dictated that it's the normality for a few years now.

In addition to this, when you look at the nested code for the quoted post, you will see that the forum automatically adds two small tags:

Code: [Select]
[quote] and [/quote]
Basically, any text that appears inside two of those tags will be formatted in a quote style. For Example:

Code: [Select]
[quote]This is the quoted text[/quote]
will look like:

Quote
This is the quoted text

You can also add the author like this:

Code: [Select]
[quote author=CookieMcCrumble]This is the quoted text[/quote]
Quote from: CookieMcCrumble
This is the quoted text

Another way to add quotes is by looking in the "Topic Summary" area below your post box. You'll see all recently posted replies, and on the right you'll see an "insert quote" button. If you click that, it will add that particular post, in nested format, into your reply, ready for edit and/or reply.

So, quite a deep method, but all leading to similar results. Quoting is a great way of continuing the flow of topics and singling out parts of messages in order to reply specifically. Bear in mind also that any text can be quoted - so if you take some text from another site you can put it in some quote tags, add the author, and it will be labelled up correctly.

It might take some practice, but it's well worth learning how to quote.

Calendar

Have you noticed the calendar on the top-left of the page? We don't just use that for working out what day it is, oh no. We also use if for listing birthdays and events. And it is such an easy process, too. We recently made this feature available to all members - so now there really is *no* excuse for not getting your events posted and linked for all to see!!

The best way to create an event for the calendar starts with you creating your post. You will need to create your game event in the "Meet-Up Madness" forum as usual. Include all the usual details - Game name, platform, date, time, and what you plan to be doing. Include as much information as you can to gather as much interest as possible.

Once your post has been created, you'll want to link it. Simply go back to view your post, and just underneath it you will see a button labelled "Link To Calendar". Click this button.

You will then be taken to a new page with a few new fields. Some should be filled in already, making your job that little bit easier.

The only ones you should need to fill in here, are the "Event Title", "Number Of Days", and the "Date". Make your event title something short and informative. For example "Modern Warfare 2 PS3 - 8pm". Make sure the "Number Of Days" is set to "1" and most importantly make sure that you put the correct date in the corresponding boxes.

Once you have completed those boxes, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click "Save" If your event is approaching soon, it may have already been added to the calendar list and you will be able to see it on the top left. If not, it may be more days away than the limit - don't worry, it will appear as the date approaches. Also, by clicking the event title in the calendar box once it's on there, and members will be taken directly to your event post, meaning they can reply directly.

Great feature, huh!

We encourage all members to use this, as it could attract more players to your events.

Image Gallery

At TGR, we try and offer you as many useful services as we can. That's why another of our fantastic features is that we have an image gallery usable by all members, in which they can upload any pictures to be hosted from here.

It's a little more simple than your other gallery affair (like Photobucket, Flickr) but it offers you all the basics you need to host your images for use on, or off site.

To access the gallery, click one of the gallery links towards the top of the page. The first page you will see is a list of all the galleries we have available.

Feel free to click on some, and have a look at some of the images already uploaded. You may view particular images and comment on them too. Awesome!

If you would like to add your own images to the gallery, then follow these instructions.

The first step you need to take, is heading into the correct gallery. So, for example, if you have some Gran Turismo 5 screenshots you would like to upload, click the "Gran Turismo 5 Screenshots" album. Then, click "Add A Picture".

On this screen, enter a picture title such as "Gran Turismo 5 - Mad Air!", and also a description if you wish. One thing to check each time is that the Category is correct - just make sure this still matches the album you wish to upload to. Finally, head to the bottom, and click "Choose File". You will then be able to navigate to your picture file (or even simpler, drag it from an explorer window into the "Choose File" box and then click "Add Picture".

You will then be taken to an image index of all your own images posted. You may click "Add a Picture" on this page to upload more images - but very importantly you must make sure you change the "Category" field to match the album you want to upload to, or it will upload to the default album. Or, click "Return To Gallery" and start from the start again.

To link your picture elsewhere, there's another really simple process. Go into the gallery, and click to view your chosen image. Lower down, below the picture on the view screen, you will see a few boxes titled "Image Linking Codes". These are the codes you need to link the images on to posts on our site, or elsewhere on the web.

To insert a post into a thread on Total Games Realm, simply copy the whole text inside the "BB Code" box, and paste it directly into any post on our site just as it is. On posting your message, the picture will be included in the content.

This can sometimes lead to size issues, however. If you have uploaded a picture that's a little too big to fit in a post, but it looks ok in the gallery, then there's a simple way to fix that.

If you look at the BBCode used to link the image, it will look something like this:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://www.tgrealm.com/gallery/1_05_01_11_1_43_28.jpeg[/img]
It is very easy to resize an image by adding a small bit of text to the image tag. You will need to add a width setting, which can be done like so:

Code: [Select]
[img width=200]http://www.tgrealm.com/gallery/1_05_01_11_1_43_28.jpeg[/img]
You'll see that the added code is "width=200" in the first part of the tag. The number can be changed to reflect a reasonable appearance in your post. Please bear this in mind and use it if you need to to make sure the forum retains size proportions reasonably.

Lastly, before you upload a picture, take a look at the original image. Is it absolutely massive? Is it bigger than 600px wide? If it is, it might look absolutely awful and gigantic when it's uploaded.

Instead of uploading it in it's current state, you may feel free to use our on-site image resizer. Please consider this as upload large picture can lead to a few issues, including our web server folder size reaching maximum, and also would massively distort the appearance of the forum.

To use the resize tool, head into the gallery as before, and get as far as the "Add A Picture" screen. Above the Title and Category fields, you'll see a link that leads you to the "Resize Image Application", click it.

**Please make sure you back up your original image before doing this, as it will overwrite your selected image with the new size with no way to undo it!**

Simply select your image by going to "Choose File" and select the width you require. Our Maximum is 600px, so please try to keep it below that, lower if possible. Once you are happy with the selection, click "Submit". Check your picture, upload it, and there you go, your newly resized image fits perfectly.

So there we go, another post with some tips for you to get more out of the website.

We hope you find it useful, and keep an eye open for more tips soon.
